Where does renewable electricity come from?

100% Natural Renewable Electricity is backed by Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin from natural sources that constantly replenish, like wind, solar and hydropower 2. These technologies have a lower environmental impact than electricity generated with fossil fuels. Renewable energy can help slow global warming, by cutting the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere.

UK solar energy

Solar panels convert the sun's energy into electricity, which can then be fed into the national grid. It may seem like sunny days are in short supply, but solar panels can still create electricity on cloudy days. In 2022, solar power accounted for 4.4% of UK's renewable electricity generation.

UK wind power

As one of windiest countries in Europe, the UK is particularly well suited to generating wind power. Wind power is electricity generated by turbines - either on land or at sea. As the blades turn, they spin a shaft connected to a generator, which creates an electric current.

UK hydropower

Hydropower works by capturing the energy of flowing or falling water through a dam. The movement of the water turns a turbine, which converts the energy of the water into mechanical energy. A generator then converts it to electricity, which can be fed into the grid.

Supporting your carbon reporting

All large UK businesses need to report on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in their annual reports. Many smaller organisations choose to report voluntarily. Our Natural Renewable Electricity option can help to demonstrate that you're reducing your GHG emissions and working towards your sustainability goals.

Our commitment to sustainability

Here at British Gas, we're committed to helping Britain reach net zero - while ensuring a fair and affordable energy transition for all. Our aim is to become net zero by 2050, and we've already made great strides - by providing energy, services and solutions that enabled the reduction of our customers' greenhouse gas emissions by 6% compared to 2019.

As part of Centrica Plc, we're also building 1GW of new flexible energy generation assets, including solar farms and battery storage assets. These will help to transform the UK's energy landscape, and accelerate the transition to net zero.

Frequently Asked Questions about Natural Renewable Electricity

How does Natural Renewable Electricity get to my business?

When renewable electricity is created, it's fed into the grid and mixed with electricity from non-renewable sources. This means we can't send solely renewable electricity directly to your business, unless you are directly connected to the generation source.

Instead, for 100% of the energy you use, we guarantee that the same amount of energy from renewable sources will be fed into the grid. This is backed by Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs) as evidence 2.

What are REGOs?

REGOs are official documents that are issued by Ofgem, the energy industry regulator. They provide evidence that units of electricity were generated using renewable sources, like solar, wind and hydropower.

Can I be confident in my renewable status?

We work with the Carbon Trust and their assured process of tracking and allocating guarantees of origin certificates. This ensures we never allocate the same guarantee to the electricity consumption of more than one customer or use guarantees from a different reporting year to match with your renewable electricity supply. This gives you complete confidence in the quality and origin of your renewable status.

Customers on our Natural Renewable electricity for business product will receive a British Gas certificate as evidence to use in GHG Protocol Scope 2 reporting.

Why do the Carbon Trust verify your process for allocating renewable electricity guarantee of origin certificates?

The Carbon Trust are a global authority on sustainable and carbon reporting. They have detailed knowledge of the energy industry and are well-placed to support both the development of our renewable electricity products and verify the process by which we gain renewable electricity verification.

Through the Carbon Trust assured process of tracking and allocating Renewable energy guarantee of certificates, we can make sure we don’t allocate the same certificate to the electricity consumption of more than one customer, or use certificates from a different reporting year to match with customers renewable electricity supply.

British Gas are one of a handful of registered electricity providers to gain Carbon Trust verification for our business renewable electricity products, giving you complete confidence in the quality and origin of your renewable status.

  2. 100% Renewable Electricity: Every unit of electricity British Gas supply to you during your contract will be matched to electricity from a natural renewable energy source and we will hold the necessary number of Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs) as evidence of this supply. British Gas will use reasonable endeavours to purchase enough REGOs to match 100% of the electricity you use on this tariff. However, failure to do so will not constitute a breach of contract by British Gas or give rise to you having the right to terminate the supply contract. In the event something changes, and British Gas can no longer guarantee a renewable supply we will write and let you know.
