How does Carbon Neutral Gas work?
Our Carbon Neutral Gas option is made up of two components:
10% Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin
10% of your supply will be backed by Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin (RGGOs) which provide evidence that the equivalent volume of renewable gas has been produced in the UK and fed into the grid. 2
Renewable Gas, also known as green gas, is created using a process called anaerobic digestion. It has exactly the same specifications as natural gas from fossil fuels, so can be used as part of a normal gas supply.
90% Carbon offsets
90% of your gas supply will be backed by carbon offsets from qualified and registered projects around the world.
Carbon offsetting is a way that businesses can cancel out unavoidable emissions by investing in climate action projects elsewhere. These projects either help to remove carbon from the atmosphere or help to avoid more carbon being released.
Where do British Gas buy carbon offsets from?
British Gas buys carbon offsets from two non-profit organisations: Verra and Gold Standard.
Verra
Verra runs the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) programme. It's the world's most widely used greenhouse gas crediting programme. In total, it's removed or reduced nearly one billion tons of carbon and other emissions from the atmosphere.
Gold Standard
Gold Standard is a highly respected carbon offset programme focused on progressing the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and ensuring that projects benefit their neighbouring communities. 238 million carbon offsets have been issued by Gold Standard.
What are carbon offsets?
Carbon offsets give your business evidence that your carbon emissions have been offset by a project elsewhere in the world; and it gives the project the funding it needs to be delivered. There are two types of carbon offset projects:
1. Carbon removal project
Removes carbon from the atmosphere, such as planting new forests or developing carbon capture and storage (CCS).
2. Carbon avoidance projects
Help to avoid future greenhouse gas emissions being released, such as energy efficiency measures or switching to renewable energy. These projects don't remove carbon that's already been released into the atmosphere, but help to reduce the amount will be released in the future.
Instead, for 100% of the energy you use, we guarantee that the same amount of energy from renewable sources will be fed into the grid. This is backed by Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs) as evidence 2.
What is the meaning of carbon neutral?
Our Carbon Neutral Gas option means that 10% of your gas supply will be backed Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin (RGGOs) supporting the 'convert' stage of your net zero journey. RGGOs are official documents that are issued by the Green Gas Certification Scheme, an independent body that tracks the production and sale of Renewable Gas.
The remaining 90% of your gas consumption will be backed by carbon offsets. Carbon offsetting helps you reduce your environmental impact by supporting projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This means a quantity of the carbon dioxide emissions your business generates is balanced by supporting projects elsewhere in the world that work to reduce them.
How can Carbon Neutral Gas support your sustainability strategy?
You should always start your net zero journey by looking at how you can cut your carbon emissions. You should then look at how you can move onto renewable and low carbon supply alternatives. However, you may find that it's impossible to 'cut' or 'convert' some of your Scope 1, 2 or 3 carbon emissions. In these instances, carbon offsets are one way that you can complete your net zero journey.
Cut
Reduce or remove emissions. For example, use energy usage insights to identify and reduce waste, or invest in building upgrades like roof insulation and window replacements.
Convert
Adopt renewable and low carbon options to reduce the carbon intensity of the energy you purchase and use. For example, switch to renewable energy supply contracts, or invest in your own generation technologies like solar PV.
Complete
Offset emissions that are unable to be avoided by investing in carbon offsets that fund measurable, verifiable climate action projects. This helps to reduce emissions globally and supports local communities.

Looking for more ways to become a sustainable business?
In addition to Natural Renewable Electricity, we offer Zero Carbon Electricity as standard and a range of additional options to help you improve the green credentials of your energy supply:
Natural Renewable Electricity
With our Renewable Electricity option, 100% of your electricity will be backed by Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin from UK natural renewable electricity sources.
Renewable Gas
With our Renewable Gas option, 100% of your gas will be backed by Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin from UK-generated renewable gas.
Case study
Read our case about northern food company Adams FoodService. We worked together to help them recycle over 98% waste and power their electric fleet using solar.

Carbon Neutral Gas: 10% of the gas British Gas supply to you during your contract will be matched to a renewable energy source and 90% to carbon offsetting projects. British Gas will hold the necessary number of Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin (RGGOs) and emission reduction certificates as evidence of this supply. We buy independently veried carbon offsets from qualied and registered projects. We will use reasonable endeavours to purchase enough RGGOs to match 10% of the gas you use on this tariff and enough carbon offsets to offset the carbon footprint created from 90% of the gas you use. However, failure to do so will not constitute a breach of contract by British Gas or give rise to you having the right to terminate the supply contract. In the event something changes, and British Gas can no longer guarantee a carbon neutral supply we will write and let you know.
