Moving home.
Tips on packing
for your
big home move
When it comes to moving your belongings from A to B, a bit of prep can really pay off.
Time to declutter. Do I need to keep this?
This is an important question to ask yourself as you have a good sort through. You may be surprised at how much of your stuff you no longer use or need. Decluttering can be therapeutic – it can help you reset and signifies the start of a new chapter.
Donate to a local charity shop or sell online for some extra cash to help furnish your new home. You’ll have one less box taking up precious space in the removals van, and one less to unpack when you get there.
Make life easier. Pack and group boxes by room
For a calm, organised unpacking session at the other end, only pack each box with the contents of a single room. And remember to write each room on the top and sides of each box so it can be seen when the boxes are stacked. This will make life so much easier when you arrive at your new place, and shows the removers where the boxes need to go. For a quick reference, it also helps to add a summary of contents to each box.
Keep organised. Numbering
You can create an inventory by numbering your boxes. It helps you keep track of everything, and you’ll know each box has arrived safely.
Mind the gaps. Empty spaces
This is where cushions, socks and blankets are worth their weight in gold. Use them to fill gaps and the spaces around small (but collectively weighty) items so the box isn’t too heavy to lift. It also stops things moving around while en route to your new home.
Protect what’s valuable. Wrapping
Bubble wrap, old newspaper and wax sheets are great for more delicate items and antiques. Fill spaces within ornaments to protect them. Wrap mugs and glasses individually and stuff the inside with spare newspaper. Try to keep down the weight of boxes with delicates inside (they’ll be easier to move carefully if they weigh less), and to write ‘fragile’ on the outside of the box.
Treat yourself. Box of comforts
Put together a care package for yourself for moving day. You can stick it in the car and it will help make those first hours in your new home comfortable, easy and stress-free. Pack a kettle, tea and coffee-making bits and a few mugs. Snacks may also help if you’re having a sugar low – you’ll certainly have earned a biscuit or two by this stage of the move. Also make sure you have some warm clothing, any device-charging cables you might need, and anything else that will set you up for a day of unpacking.
